The Meningitis ACWY (MenACWY) and Diphtheria/Tetanus and Polio (Td/IPV or DTP) vaccinations are offered to all young people in the school or in a community setting. It is offered in school year 9 (aged 13-14 years) in line with the national immunisation schedule.
Both injections are given at the same session, into the deltoid muscle at the top of the right and left arm.
Information about the Meningitis ACWY vaccination
The vaccination protects against meningococcal bacteria strains A, C, W and Y that can cause meningitis and septicemia. The bacteria are spread through droplet contact, and teenagers are at a higher risk.

Children are offered 4 doses of this vaccination before they start school. A 5th dose is required at the age of 13/14 years to boost immunity and ensure protection into adulthood.
Diphtheria and Polio are airborne virus’ spread by droplet contact. They can cause life changing damage to the body and can cause death. Tetanus is found in soil, and is a bacteria and does not spread between people. If it gets into the body through an open wound it can cause damage to the nervous system, breathing problems and even death.
