How can I get advice or support from the School Aged Health Service?

The School Aged Health Service can be accessed through several different routes:

  • Weekly confidential drop-in clinics at schools, colleges, and some community venues around Wiltshire. Children & young people can come and see the school nurse without making an appointment. You can talk to the nurse about any health issues, worries about your well-being, or personal stuff that’s on your mind.

These drop-in sessions are for children & young people, and are a safe, confidential space to discuss anything related to your health and well-being. The nurses are there to listen and help.

To find out when the school nurse will be at your school or college, you can ask at your school or college’s reception. They’ll let you know the date and time the nurse will be there that week. You can also call the Single Point of Access on 0300 247 0200, choose option 1 and ask to speak to our duty school nurse.

Is everything discussed with the school nurse confidential?

Our school nurses are there to give you private advice, care and treatments. We can work with you one-on-one, or with your parents/carers and family.

We always encourage young people to talk about any worries or problems with parents/carers and families first, however we understand that some things are private.

When you meet with a school nurse, it’s confidential – which means we won’t share what you tell us – but sometimes we may need to talk to others who can help keep you safe and healthy. How much privacy you are allowed depends on your age, how well you understand things and what the risks to your health and wellbeing are.

In general, we want to respect your privacy while making sure you get the support you need. The nurses are there to support you, not judge. We hope you’ll be open and honest so we can help.

Who might I talk to in the service?

The School Aged Health Service has a team with different types of workers. There are qualified Nurses as well as School Health Support Workers who help support children and young people. There are also  School Nurses who have received extra training on top of their regular nursing education.

When you meet with a member of the School Aged Health Service, you can feel confident knowing they are really experienced in taking care of children and young people.

The nurses’ job is to help children and young people to take care of their overall health. They want to make sure that children and young people have all the support and information they need to grow up strong, resilient and healthy.
